I really enjoyed meeting Joyce and Anita last week: what was really interesting was the use of closed networks, i.e. Facebook in this case, to conduct market research. Curious to hear from others involved in this type of research?
Thank you Mithu, we really enjoyed meeting you as well. We were glad to exchange knowledge and experiences with you! Greetings Joyce and Anita, Buzzmij
@Buzzmj comment on our first session discussion: It would be usefull to organise Livestream brief and smart project presentations which focus on the used methodology.
It would be great to get a short paragraph explaining the poster. Initial question, how did you do your online discussions - what platform did you use?
1. We selected a panel of 10 students (approaching them offline) We made sure the panel was as divers as the polulation of vocational students (stratified to ethnicity, city region, sexe)
We organised an offline meeting for this panel in which we brought up the subject and related themes (politics, elections, campaigns, voting)
At the end of this (brief) discussion we asked them to continue this discussion online -on Twitter and Facebook - with their own friends and followers. Because they befriended ''buzzmij', we were able to monitor the following online dialogues.
I would be very interested to know about the ethics too. Especially when you were asking participants to discuss with their own friends etc while you were monitoring the discussion - did you ask the friends/family/followers for permission or inform them that you were monitoring the conversations?
Our panelmembers used #research. However, because of the snowball effect friends of friends did not see this hashtag anymore. We anonymised all data before published.
Another question from our session one thread for Anita and Joyce: interesting poster. Love how the layout makes social media research accessible to the general public. How did you approach the online discussion? What platforms used? -Kelsey
Fot two weeks we monitored the online social media dialogue of our panelmembers with their friends and followers, providiing with rich data about their feelings and attitudes towards politics and their voting intentions.
We've started our next session with janet Salmons talking about ethics here: http://nsmnss.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/digital-debate-session-two-research.html but feel free to stay on and discuss more with Anita & Joyce. Anita and Joyce, thanks for contributing your experiences to the discussion.
Welcome if you've just joined us for this poster session: join in by adding a comment below or on Twitter #NSMNSS

ReplyDeleteAnita and Joyce, can you tell people a little bit about your poster?
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering what you felt the advantages were to using social media methods in this study?
ReplyDeleteIt would be great to get a short paragraph explaining the poster. Initial question, how did you do your online discussions - what platform did you use?
ReplyDeleteThe poster shows how we approached vocational students - peer to peer, via the social media accounts of 10 vocational students (panelgroup)
ReplyDeleteI'd be interested to know more about how you got your sample. Did you select them via social media?
ReplyDeleteWe wanted to research how this specific group of young people think about politics and the elections... tbc
ReplyDeleteDid the online discussions take place through social media such as Facebook or Twitter, or did they take place in (private?) online chat rooms?

And how did you manage the ethics of that situation? I know people will be interested in that aspect.
